The paper will explain the technical adaptations, challenges and benefits associated with the conversion of coal fired power stations to biomass firing. With this the life of an existing coal fired power station can be extended and large scale use of biomass at low cost is introduced. The plans for bioconversion projects of coal fired units in Europe and strategies behind these projects will be explained. This paper presents two bioconversion case studies from Denmark, unit 1 at Avedore power station and unit 3 at Studstrup power station. The two projects comprise the conversion of the existing coal fired plants of 250 MWe and 350 MWe respectively to biomass firing. The systems to be explained will include fuel handling, combustion systems, boiler, building installations, electrical and control system. The paper will deal with the challenges arising from storing and transportation of wood pellets including dust emission and how to mitigate the related explosion and fire risk. The projects utilize the experience gained from the 10 years operation of the 520 MW Avedore unit 2, which is an ultra-supercritical power station fuelled with wood pellets, straw, natural gas and oil. The paper will address: 1. The process for performing bioconversions: the feasibility study, test phase, FEED study, procurement and implementation, 2. The changes to the existing plant: the whole fuel feeding system, the furnace/boiler and the flue gas treatment system. 3. The alterations to the process systems, construction works, electrical system and installations together with control systems and instrumentation, and 4. The required discipline management, planning, design, preparation of tender material and contract negotiations. After the bioconversion the units can operate at 100 % load on wood pellets for an extended life time and thus help achievement of goals of being a CO2 neutral power producer.
