Tracks: AREMA Full Program, AREMA Student Program, AREMA Technical Sessions- C&S

This paper will address the history, theory of operation, industry activity, technical considerations, and safety benefits of crossing activation through PTC. History – Review domestic and global projects having implemented wireless crossing activation and their key attributes (for example, track circuit types, radio systems, high speed operation, etc). Theory of Operation – Describe the proposed operation of wireless crossing activation, including some basic anomalies (for example failed communications, train acceleration, etc). Industry Activity – Review the current state/plan of industry specifications. Technical Considerations – Make the audience aware of some key considerations, including: overlay versus standalone, how to handle different track circuit types, clustering of adjacent crossings, station management, communications bandwidth, security, etc. Safety Benefits – Make note of the improved safety from PTC activated crossings (for example, speed restriction enforcements for malfunctioning crossings, constant warning time for electrified territories, elimination of shunting issues, less complex out of service procedures, potential elimination of fouling tracks to remove/attach wires, etc).
