Rainwater systems can reduce the incidences of overflow events in municipalities that employ combined sewer overflow systems (CSOs). Rainwater otherwise destined to flow into the combined sewer is diverted to temporary storage and then to a dedicated end use. This presentation discusses a public ice skating arena in Montreal that implemented a rainwater harvesting system. From this case study, attendees will understand how a cistern is sized for maximum water retention and usage, learn how to implement primary and secondary filtration strategies coupled with the disinfection of stored rainwater, and learn how to back up these systems for maximum energy efficiency while maintaining public safety.
