Students now grow up with social media and the internet, but we can’t expect them to know how to safely navigate the online environment on their own. For students with autism, depression, behavioral issues, attention issues, or other needs, the internet can be both transformative and problematic. This session will consider the potential conflict between wanting to give students who have additional needs access to all the benefits of the internet with needing to ensure their safety online. From student voice through social media to life and leisure skills, we will consider both the issues and how we can prepare our students to engage effectively and safely with an essential feature of modern life.
