The attendee will have exposure to the basic explosives used in terrorist events in the past and present. The focus will be on some commercial explosives as well as homemade explosives. Detonation velocities will be discussed as it pertains to the various explosives used today. Other factors such as confinement, reflective surfaces and IED components will be presented with lecture and videos to develop important points pertaining to the destructive nature of bombs. The various blast stages and the associated injuries are introduced to focus on distance, time, and shielding. We will debunk some myths about overpressure and learn what is being used today by terrorist organizations to increase the lethality of the IED. Treatment of the associated injuries and the introduction of the Lethal Triad of Trauma will end the lecture.
