America is aging, with the number of older Americans expected to double, to 72.1 million by 2030. By 2050, people over 65 will represent more than 20 percent of the population, up from 15 percent today. This will have significant impact on EMS agencies because many of hese patients will present with chronic medical/psychological conditions as well as the medications that are utilized to treat them. This session will also show you the large percentage of geriatric patients also impacted by economic instability, elder abuse, alcoholism and hoarding disorder. These are all areas that can present unique challenges to EMS providers. Is your EMS agency ready for this paradigmatic shift and what it means for utilization of your service, interaction with social services, and even changes to treatment and transport protocols? Join Ray Barishansky as he dives into the issues surrounding the aging population as well as highlight best practices being implemented to address these important issues.
