Be an Advocate: Your Role in Child Abuse Cases (Room National Harbor 3)

22 Feb 19
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Tracks: Basics of Clinical Practice

When you transferred care of your six-year-old patient to the ED staff, you had a weird feeling that the story was not correct. But you didn’t tell anyone. You think to yourself, “Was it abuse?” “Should I have called child protection?” “Something was not right.” Being an advocate for a patient suffering from abuse is a critical role and contribution you can perform for the abused patient. In this compelling session, Derrick Jacobus will present real cases from a special victim's detective who specializes in crimes against children. The role you play is often an important part of the prosecution of the abuser(s), so it is important that you learn what to do when you suspect or detect abuse has occurred. Derrick’s unique perspective as a flight paramedic with a law enforcement background will provide you with the appropriate way to handle suspected abuse and appropriately document these calls.
