In the past automated pigging systems have been synonymous with gravity feed spherical pig systems. Spherical type pigs serve a singular purpose for the removal of liquids on rich natural gas systems. However, their liquid removal efficiency can be unpredictable along with the inherent issues of stalling at fittings and their inability to travel in low flow conditions. Recent innovations of automated pigging systems allow the use of multi-purpose pig types to provide quantitative results for operators to perform numerous functions. This presentation will focus on operational pigging case studies with automated pigging systems that include: • Flow efficiency improvements • Determining pigging frequency on liquid-rich natural gas pipelines • Batch pigging to reduce product mix between different grades of fuels • Reducing environmental risk exposure • Bi-directional service.
