Innovation is the lifeblood of the high tech manufacturing sector – and human capital is the essential catalyst to sustain it. Qualified high-skilled people and new means to attract and retain them are essential to the sustainable success of sectors that produce ever-more pervasive semiconductors, MEMS, sensors and flexible / hybrid electronics. There is increasing evidence of an industry talent crisis and greater motivation for SEMI and its members to do something about it. Directly related to this phenomenon is the fact that women are disproportionately underrepresented within the semiconductor industry workforce. This presentation will cover current SEMI programs to encourage STEM education and greater awareness of careers in high tech manufacturing; assessment of a deepening talent challenge; and planned SEMI workforce development initiatives to address recruitment, retention and diversity within the electronics manufacturing value chain.
