Forging Partnerships: Collaborative Leadership
No other aspect of schools are as regulated and dependent upon nuanced and collaborative leadership as special education. Yet it is well documented that many principals do not feel prepared to assume responsibilities regarding special education in their buildings, including the role of LEA at meetings. This lack of preparation (real or perceived) can impede their understanding of and ability to create a culture that supports students with disabilities, the staff and families. So how can special education administrators build bridges to help maintain positive relationships, ensure compliance, and most importantly, support the best possible outcomes for students? This session will describe the efforts in New Hampshire to do just that. For the past 10 years, NH special education administrators have provided LEA trainings that allow general education colleagues to reflect upon roles and responsibilities, learn the “must knows” and understand the dos and don’ts for special education meeting management. Workshop materials and “lessons learned” will be shared so each special education administrator can “make it their own”, depending on their districts unique needs.
