Legal Issues: Navigating Special Education
It has become crucial for school teams to ensure that both students and educators have the resources and support to promote successful educational outcomes. For students with significant behavioral needs, school teams may choose to conduct a functional behavior assessment (FBA) and develop a behavior intervention plan (BIP) that includes evidence-based positive behavior supports. While high-quality Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) should guide educators in supporting students in the classroom, educators may require additional resources to implement these plans with high fidelity (i.e., as intended), depending on their knowledge and experience. Session participants will discuss the legal requirements and best practices guiding school teams conducting FBAs and developing high-quality BIPs in schools. An overview of BIP implementation fidelity and how district teams can support educators will be provided. Ongoing access to high-quality training and support can reduce drift and promote educator success. Behavioral skills training (BST), eCoaching, and delayed performance feedback have all been used to provide varying levels of support to educators implementing evidence-based practices. Each option provides distinct benefits and varying levels of support, allowing districts to select the best fit based on their specific needs. Ensuring educators have appropriate coaching to implement BIPs as intended can help school teams to increase educator effectiveness and support positive student outcomes.
