IEP accommodations should empower rather than enable students. Yet too often, IEP teams pile on accommodations they perceive the student “may benefit from” rather than focusing on ones that are “only as special as necessary” to remove barriers. This training will challenge traditional approaches to accommodations by exploring their true purpose and benefits as well as the potential risks when applied inappropriately. A shared planning template will assist teams to select accommodations that are designed to remove a disability-related barrier and support increased independence. By reframing the conversation, we can create more meaningful and individualized accommodations that enhance learning outcomes and independence for all students.
