The Advanced Manufacturing Virtual Internship: A Gamechanger in Workforce Development
It is no secret that manufacturing is facing a workforce shortage. Educators are spread thin, the list of high school graduation requirements seem to grow annually, and students are pressured to make career choices without being exposed to industries that need them most. An “accidental internship,” born out of the pandemic, evolved into a virtual internship at a small business manufacturer and led to a meaningful program for industry businesses to tap into the next generation. We will show how the Advanced Manufacturing Virtual Internship connected industry professionals with students (and each other), shared manufacturing concepts not previously explored in curriculum and exposed students to careers that fit their passions and talents – all without ever stepping foot on the shop floor.
