Many job shops find their continuous improvement efforts have stalled and no longer produce results. They are continually plagued with too long lead times, an inability to ship on time, scheduling chaos, too much rework, and thin margins. The underlying problem is that job shops are typically organized along the lines of a mass production organization, which is not the correct model for these types of order-driven businesses. It prevents the job shop business process from being managed effectively, and creates chronic problems that resist solutions. This presentation demonstrates the underlying problem, which is invisible, and offers a new and more powerful way to conceptualize, organize, manage, and measure these types of businesses. This “new paradigm” will enable participants to take competitive performance and profitability to new heights.
