This presentation will use SAE specifications as a framework to discuss what to look for in a good abrasive, and the manner in which it impacts the cleaning operation and machine performance. The discussion will extend into the two main abrasive types, metallic and non-metallic along with a comparison of estimated operating costs and evaluate the efficacy of each type. Alternatives to mineral abrasives will also be discussed in this presentation.

Cost Effective Blasting: Media Selection
Industry shot blasting has become an essential part of manufacturing or re-manufacturing processes. Choosing the correct media can be confusing. In many cases the choice was made using short term cost as the standard. Looking a bit further, other factors should be considered. What are the impacts in part quality, equipment reliability, and long term cost of the chosen media? Zinc shot should be considered in many applications because of the superior finish quality, lack of wear on equipment, and overall lower cost.
