As safety systems and interactions improve, the modern day issue of inattention is emerging as a significant causal factor in most incidents. Brain science has identified four main causes of inattention, the main one being when we do things on “autopilot.” Continuing to focus on the system, the environment or interactions is worthwhile but does little to help people minimize inattention. In this session, we’ll discuss what causes inattention and how a no-blame/no-fault approach can work with, and help improve, whatever is already in use. You’ll learn how this approach engages people in what they do in a way that enables them to appreciate how they unintentionally surrender control of their safety through inattention – and what they can do about it.
