Consumers Energy, the major utility in Michigan, began an enterprise-wide safety culture change initiative in 2005. During a multiyear, multisite journey, the organization reduced injuries by 90% over a decade and earned recognition in 2016 as the safest major utility in the country. This session will be jointly presented by the originator of the Grassroots Safety Leadership approach to improving safety culture and two employee leaders – one union and one management – of the Consumers Energy Safety Culture Transition Team, which has led the process within the company over the past decade.
