Remote condition monitoring can enhance traditional railroad maintenance regimes and reduce the occurrence of signaling failures. Monitoring the performance of track switches is particularly attractive, as track switch failures can be especially disruptive. This paper presents the experience of a Class 1 railroad in North America who have been an early adopter of remote condition monitoring technology for track switches. The paper discusses the railroad’s pre-implementation planning for the condition monitoring project, its objectives, and its review of potential solutions. It also illustrates the process the railroad used to promote a positive return on investment and measure the technical merit of its trial programme. Finally, the paper describes how the railroad’s maintenance practices are evolving to take advantage of the new technology, and as part of that, a brief review of the analytics it provides is also given. The ultimate objective of this paper is to candidly share the experience of the Class 1 railroad in track switch monitoring, such that the wider industry may benefit from the lessons learned. *Missed this Session or want to view it again?
