8:30 AM - 8:40 AM

Tracks: Posters, Resource Assessment

To support the pursuit of the lowest cost of offshore energy, DNV GL will demonstrate a sophisticated offshore turbine layout tool that optimizes on cost of energy. While this concept is not new, the comprehensive scope of variables considered is. In addition to incorporation of metocean conditions, bathymetry, and exclusion zones, this optimization tool also considers wakes, fatigue loads, capital, installation, and operational costs, and industry-leading science related to the blockage effect caused by operating turbines. Taken together, this optimization tool offers a fully-integrated approach for minimizing the cost of energy. DNV GL will illustrate the optimization process and describe key aspects of the models, while also highlighting the main design drivers. Special attention will be given to discussing the blockage effect, which fundamentally disrupts traditional methods for modeling wind farm energy production.
