NEW: Washington State Sea Level Projections (What they are and how to use them). (Room 613-614)

NEW SLR Projections – the science behind the data (15 min) In July 2018, new sea level rise projections were released for Washington. The background about how these projections have been developed will be presented in this session. This will be based on the recently released 2018 sea level rise Assessment for Washington State. How to use Projections and map this information (15 min) Sea level rise projections require consideration of time frames and risk analysis. These two factors will be discussed in the context of project design and policy planning. In addition, new methods for mapping sea level rise will be demonstrated based upon the newly released document Mapping sea level rise in Washington. SLR and Restoration Framework (15 min) As part of the Washington Coastal Resilience Project (WCRP) we have developed a document that provides information to help assess the extent to which near-shore restoration projects are likely to be resilient to the impacts of sea level rise (SLR). Use of Sea Level Rise Projections for Capital Facilities Planning (15 min) Sea level rise must be considered as part of capital facility planning. Efforts are underway to identify how this process might work for local communities in Washington state using Tacoma as a model. Policy and Funding Implications (15 min) Another product from the WCRP is an analysis of how to incorporate sea level rise information into the funding decision making process for state capital grants. Research will be described how this issue is being evaluated.
