Qualified electrical workers are required to assess the hazards and the risks associated with shock or arc flash events. Without engineering, the process becomes a “best guess” on work practices and personal protective equipment selection. In this session, we’ll explore the causes of arc flashes, the factors that determine the severity of the arc flash and mitigation techniques to reduce the arc flash level. We’ll also discuss the implications of the updated arc flash IEEE 1584 standards and related coordination/short circuit studies required by OSHA. You’ll walk away with a greater understanding of what an arc flash is and why we need to identify the hazard.
