As the increase in energy demand frequently outweighs the construction of new capacity, this means that existing plants still have to provide the backbone of that nation’s energy supply. These existing plants are often aged coal- or gas-fired, with outdated combustion technology that produces high emissions and low efficiency. To support generators facing these challenges, RJM has developed a pioneering range of retrofit burner; the RJM CleanAir Burner™. This new product line consists of coal, gas, oil and biomass burners, all of which incorporate High Efficiency, Low Emissions (HELE) technology. The RJM CleanAir Coal Burner™ has been proven to achieve NOx emissions of < 250 mg/Nm3 on a number of pre-1970s large utility boilers, demonstrating that even aged plant can comply with the most stringent emissions regulations – with minimal secondary measures, representing a viable, low-cost plant life extension solution. Furthermore, these world-class NOx levels were achieved while ensuring combustion efficiency was controlled to the highest standards, with low excess air, low CO emissions and low carbon in ash. The RJM CleanAir Gas Burner™ has recently been retrofitted to a number of ten year old, 116 MWth hot water boilers at several district heating plants in the suburbs of Beijing. The NOx emissions at these plants now comply with the new Clean Air Act of Greater China, namely less than 30 mg/Nm¬3. This was achieved whilst simultaneously controlling excess O2 to <1 % vol – a level that was thought impossible for this type of boiler operating at ultra-low NOx conditions. By implementing RJM’s new CleanAir Burner™ technology, aged plants can now deliver efficiently-generated, clean, emissions-compliant power well into the future.
