The types of maintenance metal stamping companies typically perform on their stamping dies and equipment usually falls into the category of reactive maintenance, which is nothing more than reacting to failed tooling or equipment and restoring it to its intended function. Many companies rely solely on this type of maintenance, acceptable in limited circumstances, but typically a very costly way to operate. This presentation examines four die-maintenance strategies. Topics include: cost of die repair vs. cost of maintenance; the difference between preventive and predictive maintenance programs; designing die with maintenance in mind; meaningful measurables of success; the benefits and challenges associated with implementing effective die-maintenance programs; and the emotional effects change has on an organization.
