This lecture will discuss lessons learned from the 2014-16 Ebola outbreak, current highly infectious diseases of public health significance, and prevention measures the general public can take. Additionally, it will touch on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the logistical challenges it poses when addressing emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. A brief history and background about AMR will be provided, but we’ll focus primarily on AMR’s largest threats to public health and health care. Lastly, the capabilities and capacity of U.S. high-level isolation units to address highly infectious diseases will be discussed.
