Active Personnel Monitoring and Access Control in Steel Manufacturing Environments (Room 413)

This project, graciously funded through the 2018 AIST Don B. Daily Safety Grant and in partnership with the Gerdau Long Steel North America St. Paul Mill, constitutes continuous improvement in the field of occupational safety to enhance steel mill safety while concurrently increasing student awareness and interest. The project is a review of innovative personnel detection technologies, followed by evaluation and testing for applicability in the steel mill environment. The objective is to enhance existing safety barriers to effectively monitor personnel activity in hazard areas during start-up, operation and shutdown. Cursory review points to passive infrared, human proximity and facial recognition as likely candidates.
