C141 | The "E" is for Everyone: Engineering in STEM and STEAM (Room NORTH 320FG)

29 Jan 19
2:00 PM - 2:40 PM

Tracks: Future of EdTech Educator

Despite engineering being a field that naturally incorporates all of the letters represented by the STEM/STEAM acronyms, a broad, authentic engineering curriculum is often not part of a STEM program. Courses like robotics, computer science, and design/building each only represent narrow components of engineering. Likewise, they may appeal to limited groups of students. A true engineering curriculum can strengthen any STEM program and expand its appeal to a more diverse, gender-balanced constituency. What defines engineering? What is included in a strong engineering curriculum? This session covers the importance of an engineering program and discusses implementation, including our school’s success with the University of Texas’s “Engineer Your World” curriculum.
