The Viroqua Area School District transitioned to a self-funded health insurance program in 2007. Since then, they’ve been able to maintain a healthy reserve balance and keep plan increases low by structuring contributions appropriately and mitigating risk. This session will provide a brief overview of self-funding, specifically focusing on how risk is managed, as well as provide insight on a successful transition and describe the budgeting strategies that have been instrumental in the plan’s outcome and financial success.
