Thermal barrier coating of hot section turbine blades in aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines using EB-PVD is a technology that has greatly matured over the past decades.
Continuing developments in turbine design, increasing operation temperatures, demanding service life expectations under harsh operation conditions, and the general growth of the aviation sector have led to an increase in the number and mechanical complexity of the coated parts and to the introduction of advanced coatings.
The authors discuss how these growing requirements can be addressed by novel EB-PVD equipment concepts that on the one hand allow the production of advanced multi-layer coating stacks and on the other hand improve process stability and homogeneity, increase throughput, and reduce maintenance requirements.
