99 - Reducing Crashes with Connected Vehicles (Room 382C)

In the near future, vehicles will be able to see things that drivers can’t, such as another vehicle braking suddenly two or three cars ahead, a car about to run a red light, or even ice on the roads. This technology is called connected vehicles, and it has the potential to reduce unimpaired crashes by as much as 80 percent, according to Department of Transportation research. Connected vehicles can help address many transportation challenges, such as road crashes, pedestrian and intersection safety, traffic congestion, and more. Because of the technology’s tremendous potential benefits, DOT sponsors the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program to spur the deployment of connected vehicles in regions throughout the country. Collectively, these pilots will equip over 10,000 vehicles with the technology. This session offers an overview of connected vehicles, how they will improve driving safety and how you can prepare for this future.
