Safety professionals often develop workplace violence programs and training but stop short of active shooter training. Mass casualties (>3 victims) are now a weekly occurrence in the United States. Active shooter incidents often have no pattern or method to the selection of victims, which results in an unpredictable and evolving situation. Because the situation is typically over within 10 to 15 minutes – before law enforcement arrives on the scene – employees must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with this crisis. After attending this session, you’ll be able to describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents, actions to take when confronted with an active shooter (run, hide, fight), and ALICE procedures (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate).
