K-2 Makerspace from the Ground Up (Room Booth 1100)

Makerspaces are sprouting up in many schools in the 21st century. In this presentation, participants will learn about a learning space that was designed by 5th and 6th grade students for K-2 students in the school media center. Learn how to begin the planning and designing process, how to get outside funding for a project such as this, and the thinking behind purchasing furniture for this space. Participants will see how students researched the need for the space, materials that went into the space, and created a plan for how the space is used daily by the K-2 students and teachers. STEM skills and careers were the focus for the makerspace and the materials chosen for the space promote learning STEM skills. Learn how to create critical thinkers, communicators, and students that love to be creative through hands-on learning.
