Methodology for a Comprehensive Clinical Communication and Alarm/Event Notification Implementation (Room CC, 101A)

In 2016, Yale New Haven Health was faced with a challenge relevant to many hospital environments: a renovation affecting clinical workflows. In order to improve the patient-family experience, system leaders made the decision to renovate the neonatal intensive care units (NICU), moving from multi-patient bays with associated care teams to single-patient private rooms. Frontline caregivers expressed significant concern about the impact on staff communication and care delivery with the new model, and a technology assessment highlighted several critical functionality gaps. To address these concerns and improve patient safety, the health system implemented an aggressive plan to educate staff, design comprehensive communication and alert workflows, introduce multiple systems, complete testing, and train all end users across 60+ NICU beds in less than six months. Client and consultant representatives will share the secrets of their success.
