According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, one person dies every hour of every day from oral and oropharyngeal cancers in the U.S. For years, the leading cause was tobacco use in all forms and heavy alcohol use. That has changed with the emergence of the human papilloma virus (HPV-16). Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to screen for abnormalities and save the lives of countless patients. Expanded screening techniques and protocol are essential as oral cancer is continually on the rise due to HPV, and 7-10% of oral cancer diagnoses have no known etiology. This interactive discussion will review the best practices of the head and neck oral cancer screening, office protocol, and current research on HPV.
