Tracks: Track B - Mastering the Digital Era

Utilities and power generators today are handling an unprecedented amount of industrial data as the profusion of smart sensors and connected devices increases exponentially. This volume of high fidelity data presents an opportunity for organizations to leverage the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to drive actionable insights. Using an Enterprise Asset Performance Management (APM) solution, utilities and power generators can harness the IIoT to improve asset reliability and lifespan while reducing downtime and controlling operational and maintenance expenditures. As part of an Enterprise APM platform, an enterprise data historian serves a critical function by centralizing data collection and management across widely disparate sources, bridging the IT/OT gap and enabling comprehensive, enterprise-wide information access to key users across the decision-making chain. An Enterprise APM solution also incorporates elements such as predictive analytics – which uses advanced rules-based and machine learning technology to detect problems days, weeks or months before failure – mobile workforce enablement and the ability to trigger work orders in an EAM system, enabling more informed decisions and actions across the enterprise. This presentation will review best practices, methods of implementation and real world applications. One case study example will examine how Calpine Corporation, America’s largest generator of natural gas and geothermal energy, deployed a comprehensive Enterprise APM platform to improve reliability and operational efficiency. Key elements included an enterprise data historian storing more than 4.5 trillion archived data elements, predictive analytics for early detection of operational issues and comprehensive workforce enablement through mobile KPI access.
