While the vision for IoT has been well defined, implementations have not lived up to expectations. One key reason is that lack of wide area network coverage that is cost effective for the service provider and network bandwidth efficient for the carrier. Changes in the 3GPP standards for 5G will change many of the dynamics of providing long-range connectivity beginning with trials in late 2017 and full network deployments by 2019. This presentation will discuss the challenges facing many IoT applications in terms of connectivity and how future wireless networks will overcome many of those challenges.
