FDIC 2019

Safety Differently (Room 243-245)

This “Train the Trainer” workshop aims at better understanding lessons learned from significant events, a long-standing tradition that has aided our tactical and strategic capabilities, enabling us to do what the military terms “scenario planning.” In this highly interactive and dynamic presentation, the instructors look at the new view of human error. Espousing the wisdom of Paul Chillers, who said, “We can either learn or blame, but we cannot do both,” this workshop provides a format for learning, not blaming or accusing, but understanding. It is only by understanding how the firefighters in the moment perceived the event, how their training motivated them, and what their objectives were at the time that we can truly begin to understand what happened and why it happened. This workshop is part of a larger movement in the fire service to advance our discussion away from who is to blame to what influenced the outcome.
