Hybrid Power Plants – The Combination of RES with Medium-Speed Engines (Room Nile 1)

The use of renewable energy sources (“RES”) for electricity production involves attractive benefits – nature provides them for free and they do not produce greenhouse gases. However, renewable energy sources depend entirely on the weather conditions. Wind turbines need wind to turn the blades. Photovoltaic or solar collectors require clear skies and sunshine to generate electricity. As weather varies, so does RES energy production. It becomes tricky when there is a mismatch between electricity production and demand. This is particularly crucial in the case of islands and micro-grids or captive power for remote applications such as mining sites. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Hybrid Power Plant Concept provides a solution to this problem and will ensure perfect integration and development of high portions of RES in present and future grids. This is achieved through a power management system that allows the combination of RES with a battery storage system and highly efficient and flexible medium-speed gas- or liquid-fuel engines. The latter are optimized for quick starting and stopping and high load application capability to respond to fluctuations on the production and on the demand side. As a result, hybrid power plants ensure high reliability and availability of electrical power whilst minimizing the use of hydrocarbon fuels at competitive generation costs. In this presentation, we will describe our first operational reference project for the Hybrid Power Plant Concept in Bonaire, an island in the Caribbean. This plant, consisting of a wind park, battery storage, control system and MAN Diesel & Turbo medium-speed engines, ensures the electricity supply for the entire island.
