Impacts of Introducing Wind and Solar PV on the Myanmar Grid (Room Nile 1)

Myanmar’s booming economy and accompanying high electricity demand growth must be supported by a strong and reliable electrical power system. Currently, the generation mix involves a mix of hydroelectric and thermal power, and power cuts are frequent. Power projects harnessing Myanmar’s attractive wind and solar PV resources could help resolve the power shortages and would help diversify energy sources. Because they are intermittent and non-dispatchable, it is clear that introducing wind and solar PV sources will transform the way the electrical power system is managed. Additionally, the inverter technology brings new technical capabilities, but also limitations, which must be taken into account. The United States Trade and Development Agency has funded a macro-level assessment of these and other grid impacts for solar PV & wind power projects in the short-to-medium term and to recommend mitigation measures. The following aspects and activities are covered: - The generation planning and operation - The transmission grid planning and operation - The grid code requirements for connecting new power plants The study highlights the changes, with their opportunities and challenges, related to the renewables integration in the Myanmar grid, and identifies which aspects should be more deeply studied if higher penetration of renewables is desired.
