Siemens integrated approach of a predictive and condition based maintenance concept enables a double turn inspection interval for high and intermediate pressure steam valves. The maintenance scope is based on the actual valve condition which ensures best performance and a low risk level. The benefits are an optimization of the life cycle costs as well as higher availability and reliability of the steam turbine valves. Based on the Siemens expertise of designing steam turbine valves and the experience of performing valve overhauls on more than 130 steam turbine units a year, the predictive maintenance got optimized for decades. This predictive maintenance concept gets enhanced even further by integrating two condition based maintenance modules. The implementation-module typically consists of additional diagnostic sensors at valves and actuators, instrumentation & control changes to perform enhanced functional tests and a new set of diagnostic and prognostic rules that allow on-going monitoring and valve assessment during operation by Siemens' Power Diagnostic Centers (PDC). In this context, the assessment-module's basis is an automated assessment reporting any abnormality result of the diagnostic rules to engineering experts. The engineering experts assess the results daily, perform in-depth assessments regularly and initiate inspection or maintenance work during regular outage preparation processes. This procedure achieves an optimized maintenance effort for the regarded steam turbine unit by combining the individual assessment of valve conditions with further unit-specific design data and latest OEM experience from the Siemens steam turbine fleet. Siemens' extensive knowledge on the plant operation and hardware condition allows for reliably managing the component and system risk. The advanced maintenance service is SIEMENS' next step to support customers with flexible maintenance in a demanding market environment.
