Face recognition has progressed from novel research projects to being a mainstream aspect of social media, an effective tool for investigating identity claims, personalized commercial advertising, age-based vending, and some forms of access control. While some aspects of facial recognition have advanced successfully, such as matching performance with controlled, quality face images, other aspects still present challenges to the identity community. This session will explore current topics and challenges such as performance under "non-cooperative" or "unconstrained" conditions; law enforcement use cases and successes; studies by international partners; emerging applications (i.e., selfie authentication); and associated research and evaluation activities (JANUS, FIVE, CHEXIA). These are polarizing topics currently in the news and on the minds of security professionals as well as informed citizens. Expected outcomes include a better understanding of this modality, its challenges, potential solution approaches, and directions for future research.
