Traditional fingerprint capture devices relied on optical techniques (FTIR). More recently other technologies have emerged: capacitive, thermal, pressure sensitive, thin film electro-luminescence, thin film ultrasonic, contactless structured light, contactless visible light, mobile device capture with small touch sensors, mobile device capture with camera. There has also been recent wide spread adoption of fingerprints as an authentication mechanism for on-line transactions and payments. This session will explore the rapid adoption explosion we are experiencing and project this into the future. Where are we headed and what needs to be done to prepare for this future. Expected outcomes include a better understanding of these new capture technologies, the challenge of introducing them into an interoperable marketplace, potential solution approaches, and directions for future research.
