The DoD is funding the three-phase development of a ultra-rapid, portable, Short Tandem Repeat (STR) prototype called FaSTR. The program is in Phase II which will deliver a prototype device capable of operating an integrated swab-in to answer-out centrifugal-driven microchip with on-board, limited-loci allele calling. The objective is to provide a device capable of producing a limited STR profile in the field for screening against small databases in the fraction of the time, cost, and instrument size of the existing Rapid DNA systems. This presentation will discuss the status of the development and the future capabilities that a DNA screening tool could provide.
