In the past many civilizations have disappeared due to natural forces or human action. As a result, much culture has been lost forever, and in some cases scientific knowledge has been set back centuries. Our society today faces a variety of threats, some of which could wipe out civilization and lead to the loss of not just knowledge but also literature, music, drama and the like. A Knowledge Ark is a way of safekeeping our accumulated knowledge, as well as culture and lore just in case of an event that ends or seriously harms technological civilization. It is a way to ensure that our descendants don't have to re-invent many technological innovations or re-discover scientific principles.
