Speaker(s): Linda Khachadurian
In 1955, Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “The Displaced Person” was published. Sixty-one years later, the plight of the refugee still resonates. Through the work for her organization, Charitable Confections, a 501(c) 3 public charity that assists educational nonprofits in developing nations, Linda Khachadurian has noticed parallels between disparate groups of people--the Syrian Armenians fleeing to Armenia for refuge from the conflict in Syria, and the Dominican Haitians being forcibly repatriated to Haiti by the Dominican government. In her presentation, Linda will delve into the politics and personal stories of these displaced people from her recent and ongoing travels to Haiti and Armenia as part of her nonprofit work. Linda’s upcoming (autumn 2016) edible art show will serve as another expression of this topic; at the end of this talk, she will discuss the process involved in creating sugar sculptures.
