On a warm summer’s day in 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted with such violent force that the resulting ash buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The abandoned sites — buried under a thick layer of volcanic dust, ash, and debris — were rediscovered in 1748. Surprisingly, both cities were found mostly intact. This presentation takes you on a tour of the sites and presents the history of that horrific day when many thousand people died from the erupting volcanoes, hot gasses and suffocating ash. Since it’s unearthing over 250 years ago, the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — their buildings, artifacts and skeletons — have taught us much about everyday life in the ancient world.
