Acceleration is one of the most effective research-based interventions for highly capable gifted learners (Colangelo, Assouline, & Gross, 2004). Parents who seek an appropriate education for their highly gifted child may find themselves considering subject or grade acceleration as an option at some point. When communicating these possible options with school administrators and educators, parents may be met with opposition based on myths or misunderstandings. In this session, parents who may be considering acceleration for their gifted child will hear stories from other families who have gone through this process. Current and seminal research in the field will be shared. Myths about acceleration will be dispelled and tips for navigating the process will be discussed in this interactive session.
