NASS 2017 Annual Meeting

Interdisciplinary Spine Forum: Pathomechanisms of Discogenic Low Back Pain: Is There Still a Role for Surgery? (Room WF4)

27 Oct 17
1:00 PM - 2:45 PM

Tracks: Allied Health, Surgical

Moderator(s): Ron Alkalay, PhD;

Co-chairs: James Kang, MD; Ron N. Alkalay, PhD

The first half of the session reviews the neural and pathomechanical mechanisms thought to underlie the causes for discogenic low back pain (DLBP). Current and novel quantitative MR imaging approaches, aimed at directly interrogating these mechanisms, are discussed. The second half discusses the challenges facing contemporary surgical management of DLBP and present the clinical advantages of arthroplasty versus spine fusion in the management of DLBP. Faculty also address the important debate of the advantage of motion preservation in treating DLBP.

Upon completion of the program, participants will better understand the relevant anatomy, mechanical causes and current MRI diagnostic options for DLBP and how these factors may impact appropriate management.
