This symposium will look at why it is important for a patient to move from a passive role to an active role in their health care, specifically pain management, and the tools that are needed to achieve self-management of their health.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Bridge the communication gap between the provider and the patient;
  • Empower the patient take a more active role in their health care, specifically pain management;
  • Educate patients (and their support system) that there may always be pain, but there are ways to manage the pain through self-management and various therapies (physical, mental, alternative).
