Preoperative risk stratification is imperative for surgical planning, patient counseling and improving accuracy of reimbursements for bundled payments. Unfortunately, current risk stratification methods are limited to scales like the ASA, the Oswestry Disability Index, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index that do not include a comprehensive view of a patient’s health. Recent literature has focused on improving risk stratification using frailty analysis and predictive modeling. This symposium provides a detailed analysis of the current status of risk stratification, an introduction to frailty and predictive modeling, how these new tools can be used to improve preoperative risk stratification, and a discussion about the future of this research and areas for further investigation.
Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:
- Learn about risk stratification, its role in clinical practice and its importance for further health policy;
- Discuss the concept of frailty, the many ways it has been calculated, why it is important for spine surgery and recent research in spine patients;
- Understand predictive modeling and how it is used to improve preoperative risk stratification and how it will be used as a clinical tool in the future.
