Tracks: Track 1

Co-firing is expected to play a dominant role in the pursuit of renewable energy targets worldwide. ECN has been developing solutions for biomass co-firing in pulverised coal boilers for more than 25 years, and we have played a pioneering role in developing torrefaction technology. Technology developments at ECN are focused on upgrading biomass streams to allow the use of existing infrastructure and assets, thereby reducing additional capital and operational expenditures to a minimum. We have a clear understanding of the end-user requirements of (upgraded) biomass and would, as an indpenetn research institute, like to share some of its experience in both technology development and in implementation of upgraded biomass products, e.g. through examples of on-site consultancy projects provided in conjunction with contract R&D. Building on our knowledge of logistic chains and thermal conversion processes, our approach simultaneously provides solutions and mitigates risks. Some of the benefits include: • Wider range of biomass fuels for fuel mix • Higher percentages of biomass in the fuels • Less down time and other boiler associated costs • Better fuel efficiency We would touch upon topics typically associated with increased biomass co-firing like slagging, fouling, emissions management, ash valorization. Fuel mix optimization (coals and biomass). In addition, the presentation could also focus more on technologies for upgrading of biomass, i.e torrefaction and TORWASH. As an example: TORWASH is a hydrothermal treatment step for herbaceous biomass, which is performed under pressure at temperatures between 150 and 250°C. TORWASH is particularly suited to upgrading feedstocks with undesirable characteristics, such as: high moisture and ash content, fibrous composition, and low bulk density. results are promsising especially for f.e. EFB. we are working on a project with SEA partner on building d demo plant for valorisation of EFB.
